This fairly standard horror-comedy is an offshoot of the prolific “date” horror series from director Wellson Chin. The “date” series all feature strange and sometimes humorous happenings surrounding certain dates on the calendar. There’s a focal date in this flick, too. It’s the day when something really bad happened seven years ago in a vacant retail location, which just happens to be picked up rather cheap by a group of enterprising friends (Francis Ng, Simon Lui, Chin Kar-Lok, and Gigi Lai).
The four friends open a convenience store only to find out that the store’s haunted, and now the spirits are restless. Returning from The Day That Doesn’t Exist (AKA: February 30th) is Dayo Wong as the strange cop with the dysfunctional girlfriend (Yuen King-Tan). Wong ends up befriending the insecure Francis Ng, who has become the primary target of the residing spooks. He sees the ghosts, the others don’t, and nobody believes him.
This film is reasonably entertaining without being special or noteworthy. There is some decently handled tension and the scares are adequate. Dayo Wong and Francis Ng make a good comedy team, and Chin Kar-Lok, Gigi Lai, and Simon Lui are all serviceable in their roles. Liz Kong appears and does next to nothing in this flick, as does Jerry Lamb, but he has a “star” cameo. So does Lin Wei, in a bizarre turn as a Taoist priest. This is ultimately an amusing movie, though not as good as some of the other “date” movies. less
